What is BOTOX?

Woman receiving Botox treatment

BOTOX is a controlled form of the botulinum toxin that has been used medically for decades in the treatment of muscle spasms and pain. When injected into spasming or damaged muscles, BOTOX prevents unconscious movements that can cause severe pain and slow the healing process. When used for cosmetic purposes, BOTOX stops muscle movements that lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

How Does BOTOX Injection Work?

Dr. Rizkallah will precisely place the BOTOX injections to target specific facial muscle groups around the eyes and forehead. This will stop the unconscious movements of these muscles that lead to wrinkles over time. Think of a fitted sheet freshly laundered and placed on a bed. It’s smooth and wrinkle-free. Now, sit on the bed. There are large wrinkles and bunches. When you stand up, the mattress fills back out and most of the wrinkles are gone. Over time, as you get in and out of the bed over and over again, the wrinkles no longer go away. Unconscious muscle movements have the same impact on your skin. When BOTOX is injected, these movements are stopped. With regular touch-ups, usually every four to six months, BOTOX will stop these movements, allowing your skin to relax and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to diminish.

Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?

Patients who have certain neuromuscular diseases, are pregnant, have skin disorders, or have deep facial scars may not make the best candidate for BOTOX. This is why it’s so important to schedule a consultation. The best candidates for BOTOX tend to be in their late 20s or older and are looking to correct facial imperfections, like:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Lines between the eyebrows
  • Muscle spasms
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Smoker’s lines
  • Lines at the corners of the mouth

If you’re experiencing pain in your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), you may be able to find relief with the help of BOTOX. When injected into the appropriate areas of your facial muscles, it can relieve much of the tension you might feel. Say goodbye to the headaches, tension, and pain caused by clenching or grinding teeth and severe jaw strain. You might even be surprised to learn that BOTOX injections in your jaw area can minimize the likelihood of experiencing lockjaw!

The Benefits of BOTOX

There are numerous reasons why patients undergo BOTOX, as there are a variety of benefits. Here are just some of them:

  • Quick Results: Some patients call BOTOX treatments “lunchtime facelifts” because they can be completed in as little as 20 minutes. Results are noticeable in three to five days.
  • Delicate Effects: Lots of patients worry that getting BOTOX injections will look obvious. The effects of BOTOX are actually subtle, delicate, and enhance your youthful appearance.
  • Non-Surgical: Instead of an invasive surgical procedure, BOTOX is scalpel-free and requires little to no recovery time.
  • Lasting Results: The effects of BOTOX typically last between three to six months.
  • Cost-Effective: BOTOX injections are a cost-effective way to enhance your appearance.

BOTOX FAQs

How long can I prolong my BOTOX injections?

There are several ways you can extend the lifespan of your BOTOX results, such as:

  • Avoiding sun damage, as it can cause inflammation and lead to a breakdown of the BOTOX.
  • Practicing low-intensity workouts, as higher metabolic rates also cause BOTOX to break down quicker.
  • Making sure to keep your skin moisturized, as those with hyaluronic acid help to keep your skin plump and supple.
  • Minimizing the stress in your life, as more pressure placed on the muscles can cause them to contract and form new lines and wrinkles.
  • Avoiding smoking and using anything that contains nicotine, as collagen will break down and damage your skin cells.
  • Taking zinc supplements, as research has proven that it helps to prolong BOTOX results.

Although BOTOX is not a permanent form of treatment, it can produce a more youthful appearance that lasts longer if you practice the above-mentioned tips.

Can BOTOX damage my face?

As long as you are seeing a qualified individual who is equipped to administer BOTOX, you can expect they will make sure you receive a low dose of BOTOX that is still effective. Doing so will ensure that it does not ruin your face but instead temporarily freezes the muscles in various areas of your face. While there are no life-threatening, adverse effects associated with BOTOX’s cosmetic use, it’s important to make sure that you go over your medical history with our team before moving forward.

Should too many injections occur in the forehead, muscles will become weaker and flatter.

Who should not get BOTOX?

While BOTOX is a safe option for most patients, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid treatment. Although it may be deemed “safe to use” by the FDA, the solution can carry to the unborn child.

Also, it’s best to avoid BOTOX injections if you suffer from a neuromuscular disorder like ALS, Lamber-Eaton syndrome, or myasthenia gravis. Additionally, if you are allergic to cow’s milk protein, have respiratory illnesses such as asthma or emphysema, or are taking blood thinners, it’s best to avoid this type of treatment.

Is BOTOX only for women?

Not at all! More and more men in the United States are turning to BOTOX to help them achieve younger-looking appearances; in fact, it is believed that more than 500,000 injections are administered to men in the U.S. each year. Naturally, one of the leading factors that lead men to choose BOTOX is the competitiveness within the workforce. As younger graduates begin to vie for positions, older individuals desire to look younger so that ageism is less of a factor.

Also, social media is causing men to seek this type of facial aesthetic treatment, as it can help to improve the chances of meeting someone new.

When it comes to the areas men have treated most, it is usually around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows, creases along the forehead, and laugh lines around the mouth.
