Gingivitis Be Gone: Simple Home Remedies That Work

Fortunately, several effective home remedies can help manage and even reverse the symptoms of gingivitis! Read on to see some simple, natural ways to care for your gums at home.

Salt Water Rinse

A salt water rinse is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce inflammation and fight bacteria. Salt has been used as a natural antibacterial for centuries and has proven to soothe irritated gums and promote healing. To make a salt water rinse, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds, and then spit it out. Repeat this process two to three times a day to see results! 

Oil Pulling

Another ancient practice that has seen scientific success fighting gingivitis is oil pulling. This involves swishing edible oils like coconut or arimedadi in your mouth. Research from India’s Department of Public Health Dentistry shows that these oils have antimicrobial properties that can reduce inflammation and reduce plaque buildup.

To do this, simply take a tablespoon of oil and swish it around your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes. Be careful not to swallow! Once you’re done, spit it out and rinse with warm water.

Aloe Vera Gel

The juice of the aloe vera plant is well-known for its soothing and healing properties. It’s normally seen in cosmetic products for skin and hair, but it can also be used on your teeth! Pure aloe vera can help sooth inflamed gums and kill bacteria that cause gingivitis. Apply the gel directly to your gums, let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse your mouth with water. Repeat this process twice a day and you’ll soon start to feel the results! 

Good Oral Hygiene

While natural remedies can be effective, nothing can truly replace good old-fashioned brushing and flossing. So, brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss every day! Combine this with one of the other remedies above and regular professional care, and gingivitis will be a thing of the past.
